#Windows8 now starts to make sense… #asus #me400 / #vivotab #smart

I recently purchased an Asus ME400. It’s an atom based tablet. The most important this is that it runs Windows 8 on an x86 processor. That’s a good thing. It means all my old windows applications will also run on the new tablet. Windows RT devices had this as one of their major short comings and it was the main reason why I didn’t get one.

Why by something that doesn’t support your legacy apps when waiting just a few months would bring you all the spoils…?

The atom based machine is fine for normal use, and 95% of the time you wouldn’t have a clue that it contains the equivalent to an asthmatic mouse at its heart. Windows updates a something that really causes it to be noticed, with them taking several minutes as part of the restart process. That said, I control when the machine restarts, and so I hardly notice it… leaving restarts to occur after going to bed.

The atom processor is something of a talking point with a lot of forums saying they are too slow, they aren’t x64 bit and only support 2gb RAM.  All of these points /facts are completely true – HOWEVER – In the real world you would notice. Let me rephrase that, you don’t notice.

The atom runs with no fan, its fine running Windows 8 and is optimised for HD viewing.

The only time I noticed some slowdown was running HTML5 video via IE10 APP. Running the same video in IE10 desktop was fine, so the whole thing was a little inconclusive if it was actually the processor…

More to follow.
