#Asus #VivoTab #Smart #ME400 Update

I have had my device since they first came out in the UK. Actually, since stock first appeared in the UK.

The VivoTab has been fine. I am still very impressed by the performance vs battery life vs functionality. I was EXTREMELY sceptical that the Atom based 32bit device would be far too slow to do anything.
I own a Revo which runs on one of the first Atoms that came out. Its pretty terrible at most things and runs very slowly doing very simple tasks.

This new Atom setup in the VivoTab is significantly better. I couldn’t imagine attempting Windows on my Revo. This Asus is fine.
Although Windows 8 does zip as fast as my MBA i5, I can happily report its definitely fast enough.
Even the terrible 2GB RAM in the device seems to be enough. Must be a lot of disk swapping behind the scenes which are almost invisible to the user. Presumably due to the fast disk drive inside.

I have got two complaints about the device.

1) It appears buggy. I mean that for some reason it feels that it doesn’t quite run how you think it should. Might be me. But either way there seems to be simple things that should be fine but don’t quite work. An example is the Asus update. A lot of people have recorded issues on forums.
I was a victim and had to do a complete reinstall from scratch. This required a full backup of my stuff.

2) I have already had a hardware failure. The speaker “blew” and sounded extremely distorted. To their credit, Asus fixes it quickly and i was without the device for only a matter of days.
Communications and pickup by DHL were terrible, bordering on laughable, bit that said, it got back to me in full working order.

So far so good for the device a nd I give the whole experience a strong 7.5 out of 10
Buggy software brings it down, lack of hardware brings it down, but performance and battery life bring the marks up again.

Finally, accessories are near on impossible to get hold of (marked it down) and it should really include a £1.50 micro USB to Female USB adaptor in the box to save the hassle of ordering one from Hong Kong!
