Stories / research out over the last day or two show that the use of SMS is on the decline due to software like WhatsApp and BBM. This should be no surprise to some people but equally a surprise to some.
People less tech savvy are still happily using the SMS service provided by their carrier. Others are heavily using the services provided by applications mentioned above and hardly ever use SMS.
The research appears to suggest that whilst the number if people using SMS is far greater than apps, the number of messages they send is far less than app users. The extremely low cost of sending an app message means they are sent more than SMS’s.
By the end if this year app messages are expected to be twice as high in volume as SMS’s.
SMS isn’t dead, but it is no longer top of the tree… On volume at least.
