I have not submitted a post for quite some time. A lot has gone in since my last post, but I thought I would reflect on 2014 briefly before moving head on to 2015. A lot changed in 2014, I found out Sony no longer made laptops, the oil price nose dived completely, UKIP became a major political player and technology shifted from on your desk and in your pocket to on your wrist or attached to your trouser / bra (pedometers!)
I can’t say that I look back on 2014 and think of it of a stellar year for technology. The XBOX One failed to deliver on its promises of the Kinect, the PlayStation does appear to be the winner, but we still wait for that “game changer” that makes us all want one. Windows 10 was announced, but was only done so after the fairly flat adoption of Windows 8 and 8.1.
Apple did an amazing job of selling the iPhone 6 (and being now in 2015 it is possible to now know just how well given the largest quarterly profit EVER made by a company). And let us not forget the promise of the iWatch.
3D television finally demised as the new must have televisions now held 4K as their main banner. They fail to mention that hardly any cameras or footage can actually record it (let alone actually manipulate the footage post recording – given the huge processing power it will need to create an edited 4K video).
For technology I don’t see that 2014 really brought substantial change. It does set up 2015 to be a interesting year though. Drones are now becoming a lot cheaper, wearables are likely to be much more useful in 2015 (with a lot more competition given that Apple has no thrown its hat into the ring), video cameras are starting to come out with 4K at a reasonable price and we have recently heard that Windows 10 will be free for the first year for people upgrading from Windows 7 upwards. Plus Samsung will release more hardware using the Tizen OS which it is using to remove its dependency on Android (Google). Could be a very interesting year. Lets see how it goes…
