This afternoon I was fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to have met and spoken with fifteen students from Harrow College. I was asked to come and present to them on the topic of “careers”.
A broad subject with lots of room for interpretation. For me a career is a very important thing to consider – getting right ensures that you are happy in what you do, so ensuring that you pick the right paths is vital. For me, something more important than picking the right path is ensuring that you have the core skills to be able to deliver in multiple roles / paths.
The “lecture” lasted about an hour and a quarter. It covered some information on where I work, the importance of qualifications as enablers to the next steps and career journeys – with an important emphasis on the “wine glass” diagram. Finally I covered the importance of online history / baggage and how it can help and hinder a career.
I tried to make it interactive and was asked some good questions. Hopefully the group found the information useful.
One thing I personally hate is being told to attend / do something and then find it was a complete waste of my time. My sincere hope is that my topics and delivery was appropriate and that there was useful information on ensuring that you can be successful in their career.
I would be more than happy to go back and present to more students if #HarrowCollege wanted.
A big thanks to #HarrowCollege for letting me speak.
