It has been a staggering twenty years since #Windows95 was the operating system of choice for home users. It was, in my view, the first time that operating systems and computers became affordable for the masses.
Back then we had barely scratched the surface of what we could or would do with a computer. Windows 95 brought about a common sense ability or use for most to easily pick up and run with a OS.
Fast forward twenty years and we have moved forward in some areas a lot, in others less so. Back in Windows 95 days I remember viewing a short clip on #Encarta95 about basketball. It was amazing to see audio and video all on a PC, now video and video calls are common place on phones, let alone PCs.
The OS hasn’t moved on much since then. Comparing Windows 95 to Windows 8 (or 8.1) we see a slightly different interface, some improvement in stability and a lot more graphical “stuff” but by and large its pretty similar.
Windows 10 is a bit of a game changer. Microsoft are intending to have a common platform across all hardware, it will be a free upgrade for those that use Windows 7 or Windows 8.x and also will have touch built into it.
This is a big step away from the various versions of old including windows CE, etc.
Windows 10 has a chance to be something good. Back to the excitement of when PCs where new (and is most cases a bit scary, but in a good way).
Let’s hope that they manage to pull it off and bring back some fun to the PC.
